Showtym Girl Shines at Cambridge with Back-to-Back Wins
The Summer Fun No. 1 Syndicate had plenty to smile about on Thursday night at Cambridge Raceway as their promising mare Showtym Girl delivered a dominant performance to notch up her second win in a row, taking out the Gavelhouse.com Mobile Pace.
Trained locally by Nicky Chilcott, the four-year-old daughter of Sweet Lou was all business from the word go. She took an early lead and never looked back, controlling the tempo of the race and pulling clear at the quarter to win by a decisive two-length margin.
“She really did race well Thursday night,” Chilcott said. “Things went our way, and we got the lead easy. She lacks a bit of explosive speed, so my plan if I got to the front was to put the pedal down from the 800m and try to make it hard for anything back in the field to get into the race. It didn’t surprise me for her to win, but you always hope for the best and expect the worst and she certainly stepped up.”
The Summer Fun No. 1 Syndicate is made up of like-minded harness racing fans who are in the game for the love of the sport and the thrill of racehorse ownership. For them Showtym Girl is the next chapter in their racing journey, and she's proving to be a rewarding one.
Chilcott has always had faith in the mare’s potential, but even she admits the recent progress has been eye-catching.
“She’s well and truly exceeded my expectations this preparation, that’s for sure,” she said. “She’s really never been disappointing, and it's great to see her putting it all together on race night.”
With her recent success at Cambridge, the next step for Showtym Girl is to test her ability right-handed, with a view to racing at Alexandra Park where the stakes are higher.
“We’ve tried her once up at Auckland and she just struggled going that way around,” Chilcott explained. “So next campaign, I’d like to focus on getting her going right-handed so we can race for better money. She’ll find her level, if she steps up, then we can have a look at some of the nicer mares’ races. But if she doesn’t, we’re more than happy to keep her racing at Cambridge.”
For now, Showtym Girl is enjoying her moment in the spotlight and her syndicate owners are loving every stride.
