Jugette winner boosts Price Bloodstock's broodmare band

John and Katrina Price aren't averse to some "left field" thinking when it comes to breeding.
Their latest example is Alexa's Power. The Somebeachsomewhere mare had 19 wins in North America between 2017 and 2020 and a best time of 1:50.0.
In all she won over $US760K in stakes with her career highlight being her win in the 2018 Jugette, the feature three-year-old pacing fillies race on Little Brown Jug weekend at the Delaware County Fairgrounds in Ohio. Driven by Tim Tetrick, she won in 1:51.4.
John Price says they were told she was available and they decided to take the plunge.
"It was a bit left field but we are always looking for something that's a bit different from the pedigrees we have here," says Price, "and the deal was done."
"It's a good family and there are a few million dollar performers. Her first dam Michelle Power was the Canadian three-year-old Filly of the Year and won $1.2m," says John.
"Plus her second dam Michelle's Jackpot was USA 2YO Filly of the Year and is in the Hall of Fame and her third dam Jef's Magic Trick is the dam of Cam's Card Shark who was the 1994 USA Horse of the Year and the sire of Bettor's Delight among others," says Katrina.

Now 10, Alexa's Power arrived at Price Bloodstock's Winton property in January.
When they purchased her she was in foal to Tall Dark Stranger. She had a colt in May who they plan to race themselves.
"He's a lovely colt, big on personality," says Katrina.
Another of her foals, Magic Mac will go under the hammer at the Lexington Select Yearlings Sale in Kentucky in the coming days (Lot 29).
Earlier this month Alexa's Power was served again, this time by Bettor's Delight.
"We chose to mate Alexa’s Power with Bettor’s Delight to take advantage of the ‘Rasmussen Factor’," says Katrina.
It is specific type of breeding that duplicates a superior female ancestor through two different individuals.
In this instance Alexa's Power's great granddam is Bettor's Delight's granddam.

Any future colts will be aimed at the Sales. That has been the Price's approach historically and they have associated with some real headliners including Chicago Bull (62 wins and $2.4m in stakes), and multiple Group 1 winner Republican Party. In 2021 they had the two sales toppers at the yearling sales with a combined value of $650,000.
Alexa's Power joins a broodmare band at Price Bloodstock that includes another high profile acquisition.
"Last year we got a mare out of Australia - For Us All - she's part of the Leap To Fame - Swayzee family," says John.
She’s out of Left For Me, the dam of Lettucereason who's Leap To Fame and Swayzee's mother.
For Us All was served by Captaintreacherous last December.
The Prices are hoping some left field thinking will ultimately be proved right.
"We like where the industry is heading so we are happy to invest," says John Price, "we are in it for the long term."
