Battle of the Sexes confirmed for Ascot Park

By Dave Di Somma - Harness News Desk

An extra edge has been added to the annual Woodlands Stud-sponsored harness racing drivers challenge in Invercargill.

On Wednesday November 25 a team of six women will duel it out with six men over four heats at Ascot Park in what’s being called the “Downbytheseaside Battle of the Sexes Challenge”.

At stake will be both team and individual honours.

The move to a “Battle of the Sexes” reflects the growing impact and success women are having in the driving ranks. Previously the challenge has had a provincial and/or a trans-Tasman flavour.

At last year’s North vs South (of the Waitaki) challenge Sheree Tomlinson was the top individual. She returns this year in a women’s team that also features her sister Kerryn, Sam Ottley, Sarah O’Reilly, Kirstin Barclay and Ellie Barron.

Blair Orange, Ricky May, Nathan Williamson, Brent Barclay, John Morrison and Mark Hurrell will take up the challenge for the men.

Points will be allocated for each heat – 1st 10, 2nd 7, 3rd 5, 4th 3, 5th 1 – and will go to both the individual tally and the team total.

Racing is scheduled to commence at 2.00pm. Admission to the course will be free.
