Following hot on the heels of his scintillating trial at Ashburton a fortnight earlier Terror To Love added a further stamp of authority on the Open Class scene by downing a hot field in Friday’s Avon City Ford Cup. It was a professional, polished display from the Western Terror entire, who put his rivals away with his trademark finishing burst in the first half of the home straight.
Terror To Love enjoyed a cosy run in the midfield through but others had their chances in a race of little movement. Perennial leader Ohoka Texas found the lead early in the race and gradually wound up the pace to a crescendo rounding the home bend. Once in the home straight though he’d had enough and it was left to those in behind to battle for the win.
Terror To Love and Ricky May angled into the centre of the track and blasted home too quickly for Mah Sish, who was solid in second and Highview Tommy who did well for third after trailing. Those just in behind included a luckless Major Mark - he could have finished closer and Gold Ace who was solid first-up but not as dashing as his arch rival who took out the contest.
Back in the field two horses that ran solid but unheralded races were Auckland Reactor and Franco Emirate. The Reactor recovered well from his early break and posted good sectionals to get within three and a half lengths of the winner, while Franco Emirate never got into the contest but his last 200 metres was strong.
The race time wasn’t overly fast. Terror To Love stopped the clock at 3.17.1. It was a very cold night at Addington with the horses running up the straight into a stiff easterly.
In response to the win Terror To Love has now caved into a $3.20 favourite for the Christchurch Casino NZ Trotting Cup. Other big names have stayed around their pre-race quote. Auckland Reactor $6 has moved in a touch, with Gold Ace steady at $8.
Missing from last Friday’s race was Sushi Sushi. He had a virus but the stable got on to it quickly last week and produced him to win impressively at the Methven workouts on Saturday. There he beat Fly Like An Eagle who will join Sushi Sushi in this Sunday’s Methven Cup, along with another Purdon rep Major Mark.
