Everything seems to be on track for Sir Lincoln to give the 2012 Christchurch Casino NZ Trotting Cup a huge shake. Everything about him seems better than before and on Friday night that was illustrated by his Spring Cup win at Alexandra Park.
It was a dominant win by Sir Lincoln. The winning margin wasn’t huge but he held the control of the race as soon as he assumed the lead running into the final lap. The big Mach Three stallion ticked all the boxes on Friday night. He began safely from the stand, he did work midrace and he found a driving sprint to the finish to hold off horses that had softer runs behind him.
Jarcullembra and Pembrook Benny were the runners-up behind Si Lincoln. They did their Cup aspirations no harm but while they were both fresh there is ground to make up on Sir Lincoln and others too.
Sir Lincoln ended up running one of the quicker Spring Cups in its 17-year lifespan to date. The 2.44.5 for an early season 2200m stand was a good hit out. The final section of 27.1 off the back of a truly run affair proved too much for many of the beaten brigade and created a five length gulf between the top three and the rest.
Safely in the Cup field with his No. 2 ranking trainer Ray Green is able to plot his path towards the Cup, an aspect that may give him another small advantage over many of his rivals.
