The 40 Christchurch Casino NZ Trotting Cup nominations received by NZ Metropolitan TC officials wet the appetite for what promises to be an exciting and intriguing build-up to the great race on the second Tuesday in November.
The even nature of the nominations will ensure a fascinating spring will ensue. The new innovation of NZ Cup Rankings will allow connections to know where their Cup aspirants stand throughout the build-up and plot the best possible path into the race.
As usual the Mark Purdon stable heads the list numerically. A staggering six stable runners have had the initial payments made for them. The addition of four horses from Australia will add value to the race and lead-up events. Star age-group performer Sushi Sushi has already made the trip from Victoria and is now in the care of Mark Purdon. The impressive Mustang Mach is set to return to home turf for the first time since his two-year-old days. Breeders Crown champ Caribbean Blaster will add significant interest as he looks every inch the Grand Circuit performer, while a returning Talaspring will be in the care of her owner Lew Driver for this preparation.
The real talking point of course is the nomination of Monkey King. The two-time champion is poised to return from the wilderness next week in the first step of an audacious comeback attempt.
NZ TAB Bookmakers will release their initial market by 5pm on Monday 3 September. The first rankings will be released on Wednesday September 5. 2011 victor Terror To Love will head those rankings.
