The NZSBA’s Lease-A-Broodmare service will be available to all breeders who have a mare that they are not breeding from this season.
The NZSBA and HRNZ are actively looking at ways of arresting the declining breeding numbers and providing a conduit for breeders to advertise their mares for free is a good place to start.
NZSBA Chairman John Mooney commented on this initiative:
“Breeding numbers have been declining steadily since 2008, this is one medium to address this issue and ensure that every mare is given a chance to be bred from. “
“There is a great selection of stallions available to the New Zealand breeder, every budget is catered for. For those interested in breeding, leasing a mare is a cost-effective way of access good bloodlines without the outlay involved in purchasing the mare.”
The NZSBA is working closely with HRNZ to ensure that as many people are informed of the service. Details of mares available for lease will be on the NZSBA website (www.harnessracing.co.nz) and will have a homepage link from HRNZ’s website. The details will also be emailed to everyone who has bred a horse in the last two years.
NZSBA also reminds all breeders who are successful in leasing their mares, to notify HRNZ of the breeding lease by completing the form “Registration Of Joint Interest (Lease) – Breeding, which is available from the HRNZ website or by calling Kiely on the number above. This form also sets out terms and conditions of the lease, protecting both parties.
