The hottest favourite on Harness Jewels Day 2012, Bettor Cover Lover, has been beaten in the Group One $150,000 Yarndley Diamond for 4-year-old pacing mares at Cambridge Raceway today (Saturday June 2).
The $1.20 favourite was downed in the shadows of the post by $35.40 outsider,Pembrook’s Delight, who is trained by Geoff and Jude Knight of Roxburgh. It was their first Jewels success.
And the Central Otago couple can thank a superlative drive from Oamaru’s Matthew Williamson for the win.
Driving in his first pacing Jewels, Williamson worked hard withthe daughter of Bettor’s Delight mid- race and then they claimed the lead briefly before handing up to Bettor Cover Lover at the top of the straight withjust over a lap remaining.
Then when the fireworks started in the home straight the final time, Williamson shot Pembrook’s Delight along the passing lane to nail the favourite and Brent Mangos by half a head. Donegal Delight (Dexter Dunn) was a length back in third completing a Bettor’s Delight trifecta.
“This is a big thrill, because I honestly did not think we could win the race. She showed great speed after working hard mid-race. I’m rapt, this is my second Jewels win after having won with Dad’s (Phil) trotter Leighton Hest,” Williamson said.
Winner’s time for the mobile mile: 1:55.45. Last 800: 55.6. Last 400m:27.2.
Pembrook’s Delight is owned by M.A. Boyd and was bred by W. D. Power and Mrs G. L. Power.
It was her seventh win in 32 starts and the mare has now won $118,516.
