Bettor Cover Lover resumes this Thursday night at Cambridge, the start of a big few weeks for the Pukekohe mare. Safely through Thursday’s tricky 2200m stand start handicap, Bettor Cover Lover will head west on Wednesday (23rd), to Melbourne to take on the $100,000 Queen of the Pacific next Friday night.
No sooner than the she’s cooled down from the Melbourne run, she’ll be back on a plane the following morning to resume her prep for the Jewels the Saturday after.
Co-trainer Brent Mangos is very happy with Bettor Cover Lover’s progress of late and is really looking forward to the upcoming challenges, Mangos explains.
”She’s really good right now. I think she’s better this time in than she’s ever been. We’ve kept her ticking over since the Taylor Mile, she trialled last week, she looks great and has put on weight. She seems to go better when she’s a bit bigger and fresh and she’s just doing really well.”
These are sobering words for the connections of other Harness Jewels aspirants. However the Purdon/Payne machine is cranking up with three mares in fine form, set to put the acid on Betty. There is also a bevy of quality mares coming through the grades. Despite the obvious omission of Carabella there wouldn’t have been many, if any, deeper 4YO Diamond Harness Jewels fields.
