Kristie Hill            

Education & Training Manager - Currently on Maternity Leave

A graduate from the Horse Management Course at Marcus Oldham Farm Management College,and with an extensive family background in the racing industry Kristie was thrilled to take up the position of Education & Training Manager six years ago.

Kristie has completed a Bachelor of Commerce(Marketing) and worked for a four years for stock / horse feed manufacturers NRM as a Territory Manager before taking up her current postion with HRNZ. Kristie holds a graduation licence and is foreman for her father trainer/driver Brian Hill in his satelite stable located in Canterbury. 

Kristie believes that having worked in the industry and being a breeder/owner/trainer/driver helps her understand and communicate with the trainees that move through both the cadet and apprentice schools as well as recognising the requirements of their employers and the racing industry.

Kristie's roles include:

  • Director of the Christchurch Apprentice Jockey School

Natalie Gameson     

Acting Education & Training Manager

Natalie has been in the position as Education & Training Coordinator for the past four years and has taken over the role of Education & Training Manager while Kristie Hill is on maternity leave. Prior to working for HRNZ Natalie completed a New Zealand Diploma in Business at Christchurch College of Education. She then went on to help establish and manage the Garrard’s Horse & Hound store at Addington Raceway. Natalie worked in this role for over seven years servicing the three racing codes - Harness, Galloping and Greyhounds. The role enabled her to become familiar with the people and products in the whole racing industry.

Natalie has been involved in the Harness Industry for a big part of her life, starting out working holiday jobs for trainers and yearling preparers. In 2003 she gained a National Certificate in Equine (Harness Racing) – Level 4.  In partnership with her husband Jamie they run Dunvegan Lodge Yearling Preparation. Jamie also runs a full time business as a harness trainer, training and racing a number of horses of which Natalie assists with. They also own and breed a number of standardbreds as well as having owned several Thoroughbred racehorses.

Natalie's background in the equine industry (she is also an equestrian) ensures she has the experience and knowledge to tutor our harness and throughbred trainees so they can follow their career paths in their chosen industry.

Trevor Beaton

Education & Training Coordinator

TrevorBeatonBroodmareTrevor was appointed to the maternity leave position created by Kristie Hill's absence from March 2013 until her return. Previously he enjoyed a career in education, most recently being Principal of Cobham Intermediate School from 1996 until 2011. Tertiary qualifications include a National Diploma in Educational Management and he received a Queen's Service Medal in recognition of achievements by students from his school, innovations in the curriculum and a research paper he wrote on education in the middle years on the 2012 Honours list.

His involvements over forty years in harness racing include being an owner, amateur trainer, breeder, sales preparer and administrator as a Club President and President of the Canterbury Standardbred Breeder's Association. These positions have given him a broad view of all aspects of the industry. The perceptions and understandings gained from these roles, coupled with his experience in education and enthusiasm to contribute constructively to the industry, equip him to assist and support the National Director, Natalie Gameson in her work with the young horsemen and horsewomen.

Sally Waters

Northern Education & Training Officer

February 2012 saw the appointment of Sally Waters to the position (part-time) of Northern Education & Training Officer.  Sally  has achieved tertiary qualifications in Education and Teaching from Waikato University, and is an accomplished teacher with experience in primary, secondary, tertiary and industry training education. This includes 10 years as Director of the Northern Apprentice Jockey Schools and Field Officer/Tutor for Thoroughbred Breeders and five years as apprentice co-ordinator for the New Zealand Sports Turf Industry Training Organisation.

She has sound practical and theoretical knowledge of the equine industry and is a recognised equine industry subject expert.  Experienced in a diverse range of equine activities including; training racehorses, trackwork riding, breaking and pre-training racehorses, breeding, preparation yearling sales, training and producing advanced eventers, competing at national level and coaching/mentoring New Zealand representative advanced Eventing champions.  Sally has also had administrative roles with the New Zealand Equine Education Trust (the equine industry’s Primary Training Establishment), Cambridge Stud and Balmerino Park.

Sally has completed an amateur drivers course and is an avid follower of harness racing this in conjunction with her outstanding knowledge of industry training makes her a valuable addittion to the education team!

  • Tutor for the Wailato & Auckland Apprentice Jockey Schools

Aimee Edmonds 

Southern Education & Training Coordinator

AimeeAimee took up the role of Southern Education & Training Coordinator in February 2013. Before this, Aimee was working part time for HRNZ as Ownership Coordinator. She has also worked in different harness racing stables around Canterbury including Premier Stables, where she was entrusted with travelling horses across New Zealand and Australia. Aimee worked at HRNZ in 2008 until 2009 as the assistant to the Education & Training Manager and after this as the Receptionist.

Aimee has a lifelong background in Harness Racing, with her father Craig Edmonds being a Trainer and Farrier. Aimee has moved from her Trials and Junior Driver's Licence's and today holds an Open Horseman's Licence. Aimee has graduated from the Cadet Scheme and gained her National Certificate in Equine - (Harness Racing) Level 4.

Aimee is still involved with training and driving, but has also developed a name as a Yearling Preparer, having prepared the highest priced trotter ever sold at a New Zealand Yearling Sale and also having the top priced sale of that year.

As you can see Aimee has a real passion for all aspects of Harness Racing which makes her a great fit for the Southern Education & Training Coordinator's position.
