Harness Racing Weekly Newsbriefs arrow.gifView Archive
  • Henrik Zetterberg ended his New Zealand career on a winning note when he defeated Bettor Dream and Supremacy at Alexandra Park last week. His future is in Australia, and is off there soon, to race at Menangle from the stable of Peter Russo. He raced in Sydney as a 3-year-old, but this time the visit is permanent.

  • I Can Doosit  is a warm favourite for the Inter-Dominion Grand Final after two Heat wins, the second a dead-heat at Ballarat with I Didn’t Do It. However, it’s not plain sailing by any means. The final is raced at Melton, where I Can Doosit has raced twice before – both times unplaced.

  • Logan Hollis has a new role, beyond his usual one of training a few, breaking in others, and preparing yearlings for sale. He has taken on a full-time job looking after the horses Mark Purdon sends north. Purdon has closed his satellite stable, but will keep sending suitable ones north for Hollis to care for.

  • Top Canterbury pacer Franco Jamar is back in work after a hugely successful spring and summer in Australia, firstly with Steve Dolan, and then with Luke McCarthy. He won seven of his 11 starts and nearly $200,000. He returned to NZ for a spell, and he’s been back in work for a fortnight with Dolan planning to race him twice in March before he returns to McCarthy. His main mission is the Len Smith Mile, and later it will be the Miracle Mile, both races at Menangle.

  • The death occurred recently of John Stewart, a Richmond trainer who won five races with Carver Doone about 20 years ago.
