RACE 1: OUTBACK TRADING HANDICAP TROT

Junior Horseman Z E Butcher was given permission to wear a face mask due to a recent operation on his nose to prevent the dust from the track causing an infection. A late change of ownership was received for IMATROTNOVSKY. WOODY KNOT and RICHBERN PRINCESS broke over the early stages losing all chance. After 150m VICTORY TRAIL, DON GIOVANNI and TOZZIES SISTER broke with TOZZIES SISTER also losing its chance. AHOLICS BORN TO TROT broke passing the 1300m mark and again with 1000m to run, subsequently being retired from the event. PHOEBE GLADIATOR had difficulty securing clear running in the latter stages of the home straight. Stewards ordered a veterinary examination of AHOLICS BORN TO TROT after it was noted that this gelding had pulled up lame with the examination revealing the gelding had struck a hind leg causing a laceration. The connections were advised that a veterinary certificate of fitness must be forwarded to HRNZ prior to any future nominations being accepted. A warning was placed on the racing manners of TOZZIES SISTER. Driver T W Mitchell was questioned regarding the improved performance of DON GIOVANNI ($3.00 Favourite). Mr Mitchell stated that DON GIOVANNI had worked particularly well in the lead-up to tonight's event and the stable was confident of a forward showing. He also advised this gelding races better left handed and has been competing in far stronger fields lately. Mr Mitchell's comments were accepted. Driver N A Chilcott was questioned in relation to the disappointing performance of TOZZIES SISTER which finished 58 lengths from the winner. Ms Chilcott stated she could offer no tangible explanation and would be attempting to rectify the performance by pre-race warming the mare on the second night. The comments of Ms Chilcott were noted.
RACE 2: EXPORT MEAT WAREHOUSE (MILSON) MOBILE PACE

A false start was declared when the mobile barrier lost power when attempting to move away from the field. The mobile was tested prior to the race being run to the satisfaction of the starter GA Phillips. CORNELIA ($3.50 Favourite) raced at the rear of the field before attempting to improve three wide with 800m to run and failed to run on finishing in 10th placing, 5.5 lengths from the winner. Stewards ordered a veterinary examination of this mare which failed to reveal any obvious clinical abnormalities. Junior Horseman J I Dickie was questioned regarding the poor performance of this runner and advised that the mare had become fired up after the false start and had paced roughly throughout the event, he also stated that he was reluctant to improve his position earlier as a result of the mare's abnormal gait. Mr Dickie advised he was disappointed with the effort. Mr Dickie's comments were noted. Trainer J W Dickie admitted a charge under the provisions of Rule 865(4) in that he failed to notify that this horse would race with full blinds on and was fined the sum of $100 by the JCA.
RACE 3: PINK RIBBON MOBILE PACE

A late change of ownership was received for ALL ABOUT SPEED. PAINTED BLACK broke after 150m and again approaching the 1250m. ALL ABOUT SPEED ($2.70 Favourite) broke briefly racing into the first bend and battled in the run home to finish in 5th place, 9.7 lengths from the winner with Driver D J Butcher advising the colt had struck its shin and would be recommending a gear change of the addition of spreaders to be worn on the second night. USHUAIA struck several pylons rounding the final bend when racing in confined quarters on the inside of the tiring SANSON JACK. Trainer/Driver J H Abernethy was questioned in relation to the erratic performance of PAINTED BLACK and he advised that the gelding had panicked when breaking over the early stages and he would be changing the gear prior to racing on the second night of racing.
RACE 4: MANAWATU ITM MOBILE PACE

OUT OF STYLE and FLIGHT OF TERROR were back a length as the start was effected despite the efforts of their respective drivers. The connections of the aforementioned horses were warned to improve their respective runners mobile barrier manners. OUT OF STYLE broke briefly racing into the first bend and tired noticeably passing the 600m. FLIGHT OF TERROR broke with 450m to run losing all chance. Stewards ordered a veterinary examination of this filly which revealed no apparent abnormalities. Trainer/Driver G G Robb was questioned regarding the poor performance of this filly and stated she had raced greenly throughout and that he would be endeavouring to make several gear changes in an effort to remedy the problem prior to resuming. Trainer J G Hales was questioned regarding the seemingly improved performance of NAUGHTY DANCER. Mr Hales advised that this mare had only returned to racing in the previous month after having a year off from racing, and in his opinion was forced to work too hard at its last start when beaten 38 lengths. Mr Hales also stated that the mare may not have backed up after having two races in quick succession however it was his intention to start the mare on the second night. The comments of Mr Hales were noted for future reference.
RACE 5: RANGATIKEI FLOORING HANDICAP TROT

After arriving on course CAMTASTIC ECHO was examined by the veterinary surgeon who found that the gelding had swelling to a hind leg after sustaining a kick en route to the course. Acting on his advice CAMTASTIC ECHO was withdrawn at 6.57 pm. Trainer C C Briskie was advised that he would be required to provide a veterinary certificate of fitness for the gelding before it would be permitted to start again. HOT HOLIDAY and AQUATAINE broke over the early stages with HOT HOLIDAY losing all chance. ENDLESS SUMMER broke after 300m losing its chance. FRANCES ROSS broke briefly with 2100m to run. INAUGURATION broke with 700m to run when racing towards the rear of the field. PRETTY TO WATCH broke with 200m to run when racing prominently. Trainer N A Chilcott (AQUATAINE) and co-trainer M J O'Brien (GREGAN GALLEON) admitted a charge under the provisions of Rule 849(2) in that they presented their respective runners on to the track with the incorrect saddle cloths and Ms Chilcott was fined the sum of $200 by the JCA while Mr O'Brien was fined $150 taking into account mitigating circumstances. Junior horseman S J Lawson (ENDLESS SUMMER) in the presence of senior horseman P A Butcher was shown the film and cautioned for the manner in which he drove racing into the first turn. A warning was placed on the standing start manners of HOT HOLIDAY.
RACE 6: CENTRAL ENERGY TRUST MOBILE PACE

LEGEND OF THE BALL broke racing into the first turn when on the outside of CORZA COMMOTION and broke again with 1200m to run losing any chance it held. BETTORS STAR broke with 650m to run when racing at the rear of the field losing its chance. CHRISTIAN MISS after racing in the trail commenced to tire rounding the final bend inconveniencing LEFT ALIVE. The connections of LEGEND OF THE BALL and BETTORS STAR were warned to improve their respective runners racing manners. Authorisation of first placing being awarded to CORZA COMMOTION was withheld until Stewards had viewed the replay of the early stages of the event. It was established that CORZA COMMOTION which was racing in the one out line shifted up the track slightly. Simultaneously LEGEND OF THE BALL who was racing in the three wide line was inclined to shift down the track. In view of the minimal degree of shift from both horses no blame could be attributed to any horse or driver and no further action was taken other than to note the incident. Placings were duly authorised.
RACE 7: OUTBACK TRADING MOBILE PACE

MONICAS REVENGE broke shortly after the start and again with 1200m to run losing considerable ground. ARMAFIREN broke racing into the first turn when attempting to lead, settling towards the rear of the field and commenced to weaken leaving the 500m and tired significantly over the concluding stages. A warning was placed on this horse's racing manners and performance. A warning was also placed on the mobile barrier manners of MONICAS REVENGE. BEBE GUN broke after 400m when driver A M Donnelly activated the hopple shorteners.
RACE 8: WENHAM GRAIN AND SEED MOBILE PACE

DWIGHT broke during the score up and was out of position at the start. The gelding then took no competitive part in the remainder of the race. In view of its recent record the connections were advised that DWIGHT would be placed on the unruly for future mobile starts. SPEEDSTAR paced roughly when racing parked with 2000m to run. CHEYENNE SHOWGIRL broke when racing back on the markers with 800m to run severely checking TRENDY'S ROCKET with both these runners being retired from the event. MODIGLIANI MAID tired with approx 550m to run. The connections of CHEYENNE SHOWGIRL were warned to improve their runner's racing manners. N A Chilcott as the driver of LIVELY COMPTON ($2.90 Favourite) was questioned in relation to the performance of this mare and advised that she had over-raced however was of the opinion that she had received every opportunity. Trainer P J Scaife (THE GO FORWARD) pleaded guilty to a charge under the provisions of Rule 865(4) in that he failed to advise this horse would race without the pull down blinds that were previously notified and was fined $100 by the JCA. Junior Horseman D J Branch (MODIGLIANI MAID) in the presence of Senior Horseman P C Ferguson admitted a charge under the provisions of Rule 869(2)(a) in that he used his whip in an unnecessary manner between the 500m and 300m mark with the JCA imposing a fine of $200. Stewards ordered a veterinary examination of CHEYENNE SHOWGIRL after this mare was observed to pull up lame after the race which revealed a suspected fractured sesamoid bone. The connections were advised that the mare would be stood down pending a veterinary certificate of fitness being forwarded to HRNZ.
RACE 9: SPEIGHTS ALE HOUSE MOBILE PACE

DOREENS DREAM struck several pylons rounding the first bend when racing in confined quarters. The number on HIS HONOUR was observed to hang down between this horse's legs for the majority of the event placing this horse at a disadvantage and was subsequently not fully tested in the interest of safety finishing in 12th place.
RACE 10: MANAWATU SQUASH GYM MOBILE PACE

FIRE DANCER broke in the initial stages of the score up but was in position at the start. SHIRLEY broke briefly racing into the first bend when being restrained. VALHALLA over-raced during the middle stages of this event. VALHALLA was held up by the tiring SHIRLEY rounding the final bend. ALL DEFIANCE ($2.00 Favourite) improved three wide with cover from the 800m and failed to make an impression finishing in 5th place, 6.5 lengths from the winner. Driver D J Butcher was queried regarding the performance of this gelding and advised the gelding had received every opportunity.
RACE 11: MANAWATU SOUND SERVICE MOBILE PACE

WARP SPEED broke as the start was effected settling at the rear with a warning being placed on this filly's mobile barrier manners. MISS TICK A BOO over raced when racing three back on the markers. DANIELA HANTUCHOVA tired rounding the final bend.
