A false start was declared after Starter P Lamb believed that WINSOME FALCON had broken through the barrier strand with WINSOME FALCON being sent to the unruly position for the restart. MAHALA TAJ was then declared a late scratching by the Stipendiary Stewards acting under Rule 213(1)(e) after the mare threw itself onto the track and continued to display poor standing start manners. The connections of MAHALA TAJ were advised that the mare has been stood down from all stake bearing events and must trial to the satisfaction of the Stewards from standing starts on one occasion. Further to this the horse was also declared unruly for future standing starts. PATH OF A NATIVE and COOL JACCKA broke over the early stages settling at the rear of the field. KOTARE KEISHA paced roughly with approx 700m to run when racing back on the pylons. Authorisation of all placings were withheld until the start had been reviewed after driver P T Court advised that WINSOME FALCON had not caused the false start and was of the opinion that PATH OF A NATIVE was to blame with the barrier strand then becoming caught on his own horse. Upon the completion of this event Stewards lodged an information requesting of ruling from the JCA to determine whether WINSOME FALCON should be declared a late scratching under Rule 213(1)(j) in that WINSOME FALCON had been denied a clear start after being unjustly sent to the unruly position by the Starter. After hearing from Starter P Lamb, Driver P T Court and Stipendiary Stewards the JCA were of the opinion that the gelding had been denied a fair start with it subsequently being declared a late scratching from 4th place.
