STIPENDIARY STEWARDS:   N R Escott & N M Ydgren

RACE 1: MOTELS OF WESTPORT/WEST COAST MESSENGER PACE
Advertised start time:     2.26pm            Actual start time: 2.26.56pm
RUBY MAE was presented onto the track to race with 8 minutes remaining and accordingly an Information was lodged under Rule 858 (b) against trainer Mrs AM Best.  Mrs Best defended the charge and after hearing all the relative evidence the JCA imposed a fine to the sum of $100.  At the start FLAXTON FILLY and HOLLY VALANCE broke.  After approx 400m BREN DON and RUBY MAE galloped.  CLOUDSAFLYIN galloped with 150m remaining when being angled wider on the track and asked to quicken.

RACE 2: NBS/DENNISTON DOG PACE
Advertised start time:    2.55pm                Actual start time: 2.56.12pm
FOUR O FIVE broke at the start whilst TENA O'BRIEN was noticeably slow to begin after tangling.  RENDER UNTO CAESAR also tangled briefly over the initial stages.  Drivers CT Woodward Jnr (BOOGIESTOM), PJ Davis (FLY THE FLAG) and RD Holmes (NOVEMBER RAIN) all advised they had not been afforded the opportunity to activate their removable gear due to being denied clear racing room.  TM Williams as the driver of I AM AMY (favourite) advised that after leading for the duration of the race the mare hung outwards in the run home however this had not hindered his ability to fully drive the horse out.  VIKTORIAS SECRET was cleared from the unruly for future standing starts.

RACE 3: FOX DISTRIBUTORS/THE WESTPORT NEWS TROT
Advertised start time:    3.30pm                Actual start time: 3.31.03pm
STUBMEISTER, CARNLEY, DIEDRE'S MISSION and BERTIE DICH broke at the start while ABBOTSHALL paced and had to be returned to its proper gait.  BRITE N LUCKY was slow to begin and subsequently settled some distance from the leader.  With 1600m remaining METTE MARIT broke when racing CARNLEY deep on the pylons.  With 450m left to race DESERT QUEEN who had lead up to this point broke losing all chance with a warning being placed on the fillies racing manners.

RACE 4: BULLER REFRIGERATION & ELECTRICAL PACE
Advertised start time:    4.05pm                Actual start time: 4.07.01pm
DUNDEE THREE and COLIN MEADS broke at the start with COLIN MEADS losing a large amount of ground.  GLENLIVET was slow to begin.  After 200m YWERO DREAMER broke and shifted outwards impeding RUNNING UNDER FIRE causing this gelding to also gallop.  Rounding the final bend MARLON broke when improving outwards. BA Kerr was observed to momentarily drop his foot from the sulky foot rest in the run home.  RJ Butt was charged with and admitted a breach of Rule 869 (2) (a) which alleged he had used his whip in an excessive manner in the run home.  Mr Butt admitted the breach and following a judicial hearing Mr Butt was suspended from driving from the conclusion of racing on 14 March 2010 until the conclusion of racing on 21 March 2010 enabling him to fulfil his driving obligations at Reefton TC.  Due to this being Mr Butt's third breach of this rule in as many weeks the JCA also extended a stern warning that should Mr Butt fail to rectify the obvious flaws in the manner he uses his whip he would in the future face a much heftier punishment.  MJ House as the trainer of MARLON admitted breaching Rule 865 (4) details of which are that MARLON was presented to race without half blinds as previously notified.  The JCA imposed a fine to the sum of $100.

RACE 5: GIBSON APPLIANCES HANDICAP TROT
Advertised start time:    4.40pm                Actual start time: 4.41.30pm
Reaching the winning post on the first occasion TEHORO DIVA broke briefly settling quickly but losing its prominent position.  After approximately 400m DR HOOK broke when racing midfield.  Approaching the 1500m point MEDORA broke but was able to settle quickly at the back of the field.  With 700m remaining FAMILY ROBINSON began to give ground after receiving a relatively economical run throughout eventually finishing 66 lengths from the winner.  Stewards requested a veterinary examination of this mare which revealed no abnormalities with a warning being placed on the racing manners of this horse. CHALLENGE OPAWA was held up early in the run home for clear racing room.  GD Smith elected not to activate the removable hood on the eventual winner LOUGH BEG due to having the field covered.  RJ Butt advised he had not activated the removable hood on BIDDY BID due to the mare trotting roughly.

RACE 6: LANDMARK REAL ESTATE PACE
Advertised start time:    5.15pm                Actual start time: 5.16.20pm
ROMAN AFFAIR and UNLEASH THE FURY broke at the start with UNLEASH THE FURY breaking again after 200m and in doing so losing all chance.  Rounding the final bend CULLEN'S FINEST broke for several strides.  CULLEN'S FINEST (favourite) settled midfield then improved three wide with 1500m remaining to race parked between the 1200m and 1000m and ran on well despite galloping briefly at the top of the straight.

RACE 7: WESTPORT MOTOR HOTEL MOBILE PACE
Advertised start time:     5.45pm               Actual start time: 5.45.59pm
LE PRESIDENT broke in the score up and refused to settle.  STORM ATTACK broke as the start was effected with the connections of both of the aforementioned runners being issued with warnings to improve their runners mobile barrier manners.  With approximately 2000m remaining KYLEMORE ABBEY broke.  BRUNO was held up early in the run home for clear racing room.  At various stages of the race MISS TICK A BOO struck pylons when racing greenly.

RACE 8: F T DOOLEY LTD KAWATIRI CUP
Advertised start time:    6.15pm                Actual start time: 6.18.50pm
A false start was declared when MCKAY reared at the start and shifted inside the marker line where it raced for approximately 40 metres.  SONNY ALBERT gave ground over the final stages with a warning being placed on the racing performance of this gelding.  JR Dunn the driver of TOR RILEY advised that his horse had run out under pressure in the run home and was shown the film of the final stages and advised that he was to make a greater effort to maintain as straight course as possible throughout the run home.

RACE 9: FMR RISK MOBILE PACE
Advertised start time:    6.45pm                Actual start time: 6.45.38pm
Racing into the first bend MERCHISTON broke inconveniencing PRINCE SERGEI with MERCHISTON losing contact with the field at the 600m mark with a warning being placed on the racing manners of this gelding.  KG Cameron as the Driver of ICONU advised he was late gaining clear racing room and consequently did not activate the removable hood.  LEFT ALIVE also raced without suitable clearance over the final stages.

RACE 10: JIM REA FARM ENGINEERING HANDICAP PACE
Advertised start time:    7.15pm                Actual start time: 7.16.35pm
The start of this event was delayed due to several horses displaying poor barrier manners namely POLLY JOE and DETERMINED LASS.  As the start was declared DETERMINED LASS backed away and removed any chance it held.  GALLEONS AMBITION also broke at the start losing significant ground with Trainer IR Cameron requesting this horse be placed on the unruly for future standing starts.  With 2200m remaining CUZZIES VEECEE broke with this horse again breaking with 400m to run.  The Stewards placed a warning on the racing performance of this gelding.  TM Williams as the Driver of FAWN LAKE advised that this mare had over raced throughout the running.  Trainer/Driver of OUR SOUTHERN MAN GD Smith was questioned regarding the performance of this gelding.  Mr Smith stated he had driven the gelding in a consistent manner with all of its previous starts, however on this occasion the horse had not handled the track at all well and he would be withdrawing from Sunday's meeting at Reefton.
