STIPENDIARY STEWARDS:  K R Williams, N M Ydgren, S P Renault

RACE 1:  BUSH INN TAVERN & TAB TROT
Advertised start time: 1.00pm                   Actual start time: 1.00.23pm
Horses to break at the start and or during the running were MYSTIC REIGN, MAJOR DOMUS, UGLY BETTY, TIZ A SECRET, RUBY N DIAMONDS, BABY GRAND, SEEKER DHU and XENON.  CHEVAL DE TRIOMPHE struck a number of pylons with 900m to run.  The connections of BABY GRAND and SEEKER DHU were warned to improve their respective runner's standing start and or racing manners.  The connections of TIZ A SECRET were advised that the filly had been stood down from all stake bearing events for 14 days.  XENON (favourite) lost all chance when breaking over the early stages.  Trainer M P Edmonds was reminded of his obligations when having two runners in a race to ensure that the drivers wear distinguishing hat covers.  Driver I D S Keith (ARMBRO LUSTRE) was charged with a breach of Rule 869(5) for alleged half carting and after hearing the evidence and viewing the films the JCA imposed a fine of $200.  Trainer S J Clarke admitted a breach of Rule 864(2)(d) in that the pull down blinds on SUN OF MYSTERY malfunctioned and was fined $100 by the JCA.

RACE 2:  MAGPIES REST CAFÉ "VIVACE COFFEE" MOBILE PACE
Advertised start time: 1.35pm                   Actual start time: 1.35.25pm
Shortly after the start BORN AGAIN CAMEO broke with the connections being warned to improve the horse's mobile barrier manners.  With approx 650m to run MOLLIE MACH (S J Thompson) attempted to shift FORWARD PASS (D B Earnshaw) wider on the track which resulted in both of these horses breaking and losing all chance.  UNION BUSTER was held up for clear racing room until late in the run home.  UNION BUSTER was cleared from the unruly for future mobile starts.  Following the running of this event driver S J Thompson admitted a breach of Rule 869(4) for driving in a manner causing interference to his own horse and another runner with the JCA suspending his horseman's licence up to and including 11 March 2010.  Driver D B Earnshaw was warned for the manner in which he drove during this incident.

RACE 3:  "FLAIR" (SOUTH ISLAND) PACE
Advertised start time: 2.10pm                   Actual start time: 2.10.29pm
Over the early stages WHY AYE MAN, ILLUMAWAY, BELLA'S LAD, EVEN BETTER and THE VILLAGE NURSE broke.  BERTALBERT compounded with approx 700m to run with a veterinary inspection being requested revealing no abnormalities.  TRYCON struck pylons rounding the final bend when tiring.  With approx 1250m to run I COURAGE (favourite) broke when racing back in the field inconveniencing trailing runners in particular BERTALBERT and KIN KAID.  B N Orange (I COURAGE) advised this horse had not felt comfortable at any stage of this event. Authorisation of 1st place being awarded to EVEN BETTER was withheld until it was confirmed that the filly had complied with the breaking horse regulations when in a break over the early stages.  Placings were duly authorised.

RACE 4:  CHEVIOT BUSINESSES MOBILE PACE
Advertised start time: 2.45pm                   Actual start time: 2.45.14pm
TUSCANY GOLD broke early in the score up and took no part in the event with Stewards placing this horse on the unruly for future mobile starts. With 600m remaining VIENNA BROMAC broke when racing in second last position when following WONDERFUL TONIGHT (J T Keast) and LILAC SPLASH (M P Jones). Both the above mentioned drivers were warned for the manner in which they drove at this stage of the race when jostling for rights to the three wide line.  LILAC SPLASH broke rounding the final bend with the connections being warned to improve the mare's racing manners.  Rounding the final bend NUMERO UNO suffered a flat tyre when racing in front of RUBY ANN (K V Hadfield) which then paced roughly when improving into the passing lane.  An Information was lodged under Rule 869(3)(b) careless driving against K V Hadfield for allegedly striking the sulky wheel of NUMERO UNO with this enquiry being opened and adjourned due to K V Hadfield having left the course.

RACE 5:  "DONEGAL HOUSE" THE LITTLE IRISH PUB NEAR KAIKOURA HCP PACE
Advertised start time: 3.17pm                   Actual start time: 3.17.19pm
Over the early stages WIBAHE ZEUS, IREBY BAZIL BRUSH, NO TAR and NASHOTA broke.  With 950m to run NASHOTA again broke with resulting interference to ALL NIGHT FANTASY, DELMA'S MCARDLE and GREAT PLACE with GREAT PLACE being retired from the event.  DELMA'S MCARDLE struck a number of pylons rounding the final bend.  The connections of IREBY BAZIL BRUSH were warned to improve the gelding's barrier manners while the connections of NASHOTA were warned to improve the mare's barrier and racing manners.  Trainer P M Vermeulen (HELICON) admitted a breach of Rule 865(4) in that he failed to advise that this horse would not be wearing half blinds as previously notified and was fined $100 by the JCA.

RACE 6:  MERIAL ANCARE ECLIPSE POUR ON FOR CATTLE MOBILE PACE
Advertised start time: 3.52pm                   Actual start time: 3.52.29pm
HOON HAY was back off the mobile gate at dispatch.  After approx 400m RAVEN paced roughly when racing back in the field.  With approx 900m to run HILARIOUS LIFE when racing midfield broke with this gelding again pacing roughly rounding the final bend.  FRANCO NARTISCAPE and FATHER BILL tired rounding the final bend inconveniencing FIGO with this gelding improving wide rounding the final bend and running on well into 4th place.  Following the running of this event D B Earnshaw (HOON HAY) admitted a Breach of Rule 857(7)(g) in that he failed to come up and maintain his position on the mobile gate and was fined $200 by the JCA.

RACE 7: CHEVIOT LICENSING TRUST "CHEVIOT CUP"
Advertised start time: 4.27pm                   Actual start time: 4.27.39pm
SHESACHRISTIAN stood on the mark and was slow to begin while SOKY'S GAIN tangled with LIONELS MEDDLE breaking shortly after the start.  SHESACHRISTIAN tired with approx 600m to run with a veterinary inspection being requested which revealed no abnormalities.

RACE 8:  NEVELE R STAKES
Advertised start time: 5.02pm                 Actual start time: 5.02.33pm
HIGHVIEW CHASUE was back at dispatch after pacing roughly in the score up.  Shortly after the start NANCY MILES paced roughly before breaking and almost falling with 1700m to run after being restrained to the rear of the field.  With approx 1000m to run DELIGHTFUL BLUE broke when racing in the one one with resultant checks to TARA TOPLADY and VAIL.  The connections of NANCY MILES, DELIGHTFUL BLUE and HIGHVIEW CHASUE were warned to improve their respective runner's mobile barrier and or racing manners.  Driver B J Morris (FLASHONBYE) dropped his leg momentarily out of the sulky footrest in the run home.  HIGHVIEW CHASUE (favourite) after being slow to begin raced at the rear of the field before improving three wide with cover with approx 1200m to run and tired in the run home finishing well off the field.  Driver J T Keast was charged with a breach of Rule 869(2)(a) for excessive use of the whip on PARADISE CITY in the run home.  After viewing the films and hearing the relevant evidence the JCA upheld the charge and imposed a fine of $250.

RACE 9:  HEINIGER "CAPEX CLASSIC" HANDICAP TROT
Advertised start time: 5.37pm                 Actual start time: 5.39.19pm
The front shoes on EXILE were removed after the gelding pulled a shoe in the preliminary.  The start of this event was delayed due to a number of horses being fractious prior to the start.  MY THREE LADS stood on the mark and then broke with EIGHT DOUBLE EIGHT also breaking over the early stages.  After approx 200m DARBY DOLL broke with EXILE breaking shortly after.  The connections of DARBY DOLL, MY THREE LADS and EIGHT DOUBLE EIGHT were warned to improve their respective runner's barrier or racing manners.  GOLDSTAR INVASION was cleared from the unruly for future standing starts.  Driver M P Jones (VATUVEI) dropped his foot momentarily out of the sulky footrest early in the run home.  Following the running of this event driver P C Nairn admitted a breach of Rule 869(2)(a) for excessive use of the whip on KAHDON in the run home and the JCA suspended his horseman's licence from 14 March up to and including 23 March 2010.

RACE 10:  BUSH INN TAVERN MOBILE PACE
Advertised start time: 6.07pm      Amended start time: 6.09pm           Actual start time: 6.09.30pm
The start of this event was changed to 6.09pm by the TAB on Friday after the race books had been printed.  With approx 1000m to run VERSACE WOMAN broke after being shifted wider on the track.  ARMAFIREN struck pylons rounding the final bend.  ATOM OF COURAGE (favourite) sat parked before improving to lead with approx 1100m to run and then take the trail with approx 800m to run and failed to run on in the run home finishing in 8th place.
