New Zealand Cup winner Mainland Banner
was sold for $135,000 as part of the dispersal sale of Cullen
Breeding stock held last Sunday. She was bought by Peter
Chambers, of Melbourne, who also purchased a yearling colt by
Christian Cullen. Mainland Banner will be bred to Rocknroll
Hanover.
Trainer
Tim Butt and his brother Anthony Butt won a third of the card
at Addington last week, which was not surprising considering
the quality of horses they presented. Ray resumed after a
two-year break to win the main trot, Stunin Cullen could not
overhaul Raglan after giving him a big start, and Absolute
Classic made a winning debut against the maidens.
The death occurred last month of Bert
Clapham. He was involved in many aspects of harness racing in
the Auckland area, and was considered a loveable rogue by the
many who knew him.
Mark Jones may have won two races last
week, but he predicts it will be a “quiet” season for the
team. The well-performed racemare Crystal Star has been
retired after being bought by Peter Chambers, San Fran Lady
has gone to Sydney and Telemecanique is on her way to the US.
Jones won with the handy performers Algeepee and Jackaroozy.
Former top racemare Adio Routine died on
Monday from complications near foaling time. She won 15 races,
including two heats of the Inter-Dominions in Auckland, and
the Canterbury Breeders’ Stakes.
