The role of the Trainer

Trainer-1.jpg (20532 bytes)The New Zealand trainer has long been known for their hands-on approach to developing our home grown horses into athletes that compete and win against the best on offer in Australasia and, more recently, the world.  Trainers are psychologists who recognise that each horse is an individual with its own special characteristics.   Their job is to find the key to unlocking the horse’s full potential.

If you purchase a horse at the yearling sales your trainer is responsible forTrainer-2.jpg (23770 bytes) getting the horse broken in (gaited), which he or she may do themselves or may choose to engage a specialist to do.

Following this it is up to the trainer to monitor the horse’s progress including breaks in between training (spelling) and the overall welfare of the horse. It is also their responsibility to nominate the horse for any trials and or races and to engage a driver.  This may be done in consultation with the owner.

It is important to take advice when it comes to selecting a trainer as you can see from above; you rely on them to get the job done right.
