Getting Started

GettingStarted-1.jpg (27746 bytes)Where do I start?  There are some important steps to follow.

Step one—Research
It is important to do some research into racehorse ownership and there are a number of organizations available to assist.  The best places to start are Harness Racing New Zealand, New Zealand Trotting Trainers and Drivers Association, New Zealand Owners’ Association, and The New Zealand Standardbred Breeders’ Association.  Other contacts include the yearling sale vendors Pyne Gould Guinness and the New Zealand Sires’ Stakes Board.  A list of these is on the back page of this brochure.

Step two— Types of ownership
There are four different ways to become involved in the ownership of a racehorse.  It is important that you decide which one of these paths you are going to take.  Details of the types of ownership are found under “Types of ownership”.

Step three—Select a trainer
To enable you to race your horse you must give it to a licensed trainer.  Trainers come in different ranges of quality, price and performance.  The right choice is important and you should try and find out as much information about your potential trainer as possible.  Here are a couple of contacts you may wish to try:
